REI KAWAKUBO : COMME des GARCONS
REI KAWAKUBO (born 1942) is a japanese fashion designer and the founder of “COMME des GARCONS”. In 1982, KAWAKUBO unveiled her legendry black clothes at Paris Fashion Week. Her “Black Clothes” which shook the fashion worlds, was called the “Shock of Black”. She continues to send out new shocks even now.
KAWAKUBO´s works always asks us a new question. In contrast to other designers searching for answers.
CLOTHES / NOT CLOTHES is one of the themes of her exhibition – the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
„If we say these are clothes,´ it´s all very usual, so we saidthese are not clothes.´ It sounds like a ZEN dialoque, but it is very simple.” (REI KAWAKUBO)
I try to make “JEWELRY / NOT JEWELRY” for REI KAWAKUBO.
“For more than 40 years that I have been making clothes, I have never thought about fashion. What I´ve only ever been interested in is clothes that one has never seen before, that are completely new, and how and in what way they can be expressed. Is that called fashion? I don´t know the answer.” (REI KAWAKUBO)
