About:
Like the water…
purity, nature, regeneration and life in the jewels by Mari Ishikawa.
„Poetry … lies in the grass, beneath your feet, you just need to bend down to see it and pick it up.“
(B. PASTERNAK, speech at the Congress of Writers for the Defence of Culture, Paris, June 25th, 1935)
Purity, time, fluency, regeneration.
These concepts are the object of Mari Ishikawa’s work.
The intellectual and expressive research that the Japanese jewelry artist has been conducting with passion and consistently for 30 years seems to focus on living nature, first, and on the capacity some objects have to float on Time surface, subsequently, up to becoming memory. Therefore, the shapes of plants and simple things are a typical iconographic element of her works. Such poetic vision, whose borders are defined and continuously re-defined by Ishikawa, cannot fail to include human beings. The bonds they establish with the surrounding tangible landscape, as well as with their counterparts, are metaphorically expressed when giving shape to her jewels: especially through the knot, which is one of the most frequent element in the artist’s production. The knot represents an important concept in the Japanese culture, dating back to the ancient rituals sacred to Shinto religion, and then found in the art of paper packaging and arranging the kimono. Said knots are perceived by the artist as bonds, strong connections, ties that are sometimes hard to loose, undesired conditioning suffered, but also, when in irregular sequences, tormented signs of borders, boundaries one wishes to break while craving for freedom and new spaces, uncharted landscapes, different realities to dive into, experience and love.
